Nominations, please: 2026 MSEA-SEIU Steward of the Year

Jason Alley, president of our Maine Maritime Academy Chapter, thanks MSEA-SEIU delegates at our 2025 Annual Meeting Banquet after being named as our 2025 MSEA-SEIU Steward of the Year.

At our 2026 MSEA-SEIU Annual Meeting, we will present our 2026 MSEA-SEIU Steward of the Year award! Nominate a steward for this award here.

All MSEA-SEIU members, including stewards, and MSEA-SEIU staff can nominate an exceptional steward for this award. Union stewards are essential to building a stronger labor movement. Stewards do a lot of behind-the-scenes work that often doesn’t get the attention and recognition it deserves. Nominate a steward for this award here.

A committee will evaluate all the submissions and make a selection, and we will recognize the chosen recipient at our 2026 MSEA-SEIU Annual Meeting on Oct. 16-17, 2026. The deadline for nominations is 5pm Friday, July 31, 2026.

Use the following criteria to consider nominations. We are looking for a steward who:

  • Defends and enforces union contracts
  • Educates and orients new members by greeting them, signing them up and teaching them about our union
  • Helps members with workplace issues
  • Engages members in collective action
  • Listens well and follows through with coworkers and the management
  • Earns the trust and respect of the members they lead
  • Serves as the eyes and ears of the union
  • Carries out worksite communications
  • Has one-on one-conversations with members at work, one of the most important strategic resources and advantages unions have
  • Leads by example

Again, the deadline for submitting nominations is 5pm Friday, July 31, 2026. Nominate a steward for this award here.
