In 1943, over 200 state workers gathered in the State House to form an organization to advocate for a voice at work, and in the Legislature. Today, the Maine Service Employees Association, Local 1989 of the Service Employees International Union, has grown into a member-run union of over 13,000 active and retired Maine workers across over twenty employers in the public and private sectors.
Together we organize in our worksites and in our communities to advocate for our families, our coworkers, the service our members provide, and for the right to dignity and respect for all workers- active and retired. Through collective bargaining, political action, and issue campaigns, members of MSEA make their voices heard wherever the decisions are being made.
In 1989, members of our union voted to affiliate with the Service Employees International Union, a 2-million member union representing workers all across our nation and throughout North America. SEIU members are health care, public services and property services workers who are – united by the belief in the dignity and worth of workers and the services they provide and dedicated to improving the lives of workers and their families and creating a more just and humane society
