Ask the Legislature to Fund Closing the Pay Gap!

Thanks to members mobilizing during the budget hearings, the Legislature heard firsthand how members are feeling due to pressure around them with so many vacant positions, as well as the State’s lack of ability to recruit and retain employees. MSEA members have been raising these alarms for several years. We have flagged that cuts, stagnation, and rising costs continue to create this perfect storm.

We all know reports in 2020 and 2009 show we’re underpaid by 15% on average — far more than that for scores of positions including, but certainly not limited to, chemists, maintenance mechanics, civil engineers, office assistants and associates, customer service representatives for our state parks, and the workers at the State-run schools in Maine’s unorganized territories. We have provided the legislature suggestions and ideas. It is past time to right this ship!

Use this form to tell your state legislators and the State and Local Government Committee: In the budget, fund closing the pay gap and update the state’s broken classification system, and CUSTOMIZE your message if possible!

Maine’s elected leaders need to hear from more State workers. Tell them your story. Tell them what you’re doing to make ends meet as you provide the services Maine people count on. Tell them the State has the resources to address the pay gap and we can’t keep letting the problem get worst. Tell them to fund closing the pay gap and update the state’s broken classification system!
