Openings on the State Employee Health Commission

We’re looking for nominations for members interested in representing us on the State Employee Health Commission. Three of our labor seats are open – representing workers in three of our bargaining units: the Operations, Maintenance and Support Unit in the Executive Branch of Maine State Government, MainePERS and Maine Maritime Academy.

The state employee health plans are group health plans offered to active state employees, legislators, other ancillary employees and retirees as provided in Maine law. The plans currently serve over 34,000 individuals. The health plans overseen by the Commission consistently have been recognized as models of efficiency and accountability with a real focus on providing Mainers with access to quality, affordable healthcare. With its plan design, the Commission has led the way in securing quality and cost controls at Maine hospitals that benefit not only participants in the health plans but also all Maine people.

The State Employee Health Commission is a 24-member labor-management group serving as the trustee of the State of Maine’s group health plans. Under Maine law, we appoint members from our bargaining units to represent us on the Commission. The Commission has the fiduciary duty to the plans and ultimately decides what benefits and coverage plan members will receive based on the funding available and impacts to plan membership.

Members of the Commission meet monthly, typically the third Thursday of the month. Occasional special meetings are held, as well as subcommittee meetings. Commission members can participate remotely or in-person in Augusta if they prefer.
